Does plaquenil suppress your immune system

I started on it just less than 2 weeks ago, and I'm surrounded by ill people at work and already have a bit of a cold (nothing severe). it is "milder" than a lot of the other dmards in terms of side effects and activity x It is listed as having a mild immunosuppressant effect in my book on RA, but one of the reasons for the blood tests is to check that your immune system is not being suppressed too much (eg checking your white blood cell levels), so you shouldn't be completely vulnerable. Even after several years of taking lots of drugs I've not found any difference in the number of colds etc I get, and loads of people on here are teachers etc who get a lot of exposure to colds and coughs without too much problem.

The adult dose of Plaquenil to suppress malaria is 400 mg on the same day each week. The pediatric weekly suppressive dosage is 5 mg/kg of body weight. The adult dose of Plaquenil to treat an acute attack of malaria is an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg in six to eight hours and 400 mg for two more days. Plaquenil works by suppressing the immune system. Unfortunately you can't tell it to attack just the germs so you suppress all of its function to spare your healthy tissue- in your husband's case, his eyes, mouth, throat. NOTE Plaquinil and hydroxychloroquine are essentially the same drug. The same effects should be expected from both drugs. 2. No, his immune system should not be forever compromised. Polly Thank you both, I thought it shouldn't be too bad and that it's pretty mild in comparison to other drugs. Always better to be well informed and I remember the consultant saying its bit a bad time of year to start on it as I've missed all the bugs round Christmas time so thought there may be a slim chance of it being suppressed. But do look after yourself, and make sure you eat well and don't get too tired as if you have a cold already you need to pamper yourself a bit more than you would have before RA.

The way I've always understood it, Plaquenil is NOT a immunosupressant. Immunopressant's are meds that suppress the immune system.prednisone.drug suppresses our immune system, calms it down so that our psycho immune system won't turn around and attack us so much. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. A rare side effect of Plaquenil involves visual changes or possible loss of vision —the side effect that is most worrisome for patients. This dosing would NOT apply to someone already taking plaquenil, because it has a very long ~ 30 days half-life, and it’s already in your system, so you just keep on keep’n on. This is not intended to be medical advice; this is just a reminder to refill whatever Rx for plaquenil you might already have.
