What is the correct way to discontinue use of plaquenil? Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.

Methotrexate and plaquenil - @Kristinsaba1988. I was on both for 2 years without a problem, I've stopped taking plaquenil but am still on 20mg methotrexate per week for closer to 3 years now without incident. Yes it's scary to begin with but when your quality of life slowly returns it's all worthwhile.
