Stop taking plaquenil and prednisone for my lupus

The pharmacist said there wont be any danger just stopping it. Has anyone gone off the plaquenil and what happened? I was put on Plaquenil for RA as I was being dx for lupus. My rhuemy wants me to stop every time I have an infection. Best of luck, Creekbank My mom said she read that plaquenil is mainly used for the discoid lupus and people with the joint pain. Right now my hips are the only thing that is really bothering me my knees are now starting to act up.....

Prednisone is the steroid most commonly prescribed for lupus. It is usually given as tablets that come in 1, 5, 10, or 20 milligram mg doses. Pills may be taken as often as 4 times a day or as infrequently as once every other day. People have indicated they have taken Prednisone. Overview. Prednisone is a prescription medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration FDA in the 1950s to treat inflammation associated with lupus. Prednisone may be prescribed at a low dose for maintenance, or at a high dose to control acute flare-ups. If you don't have to, don't stop your plaquenil. I stopped taking the plaquenil the beginning of December. It doesn't agree with my stomach I take it with meals too. And since I hadn't had a miraculous recovery the 6 months I'd been on it, I didn't think there was any harm in stopping it.

There is no taper needed or withdrawal, but if it has been helping you, you may have increased symptoms by the time you go for your next appointment. If so, you would likely be able to get a prescription from that doctor for one month's supply to tide you over. I have only taken it once, so I am not sure what the results will be. I stopped mine and went into a life threatening flare - I would call your PCP to get a refill You may be fine or not- depends on if your illness has been lurking in the background waiting for an opportunity to launch an attack Louters, I went to see a new rheum and he took me off the Plaquenil to see what symptoms would show. I agree with poobie and would call your pcp to get a refill if possible.

  3. Yes, if the plaquenil controls your Lupus flares, it is best to not use the prednisone. I hope you can get off of it completely, or at least take a small maintenance dose. Take it very slow.

Hi. I have been taking Plaquenil, 200mgs 2x a day for about 2 years. I have not tested positive for Lupus, RA or SjS but it took over 13 years before my sister finally tested positive for Lupus & RA. You can still have Lupus/RA & not be positive. Re Plaquenil - Better Than Prednisone? Have been taking Plaquenil for over a year now and it has definitely made a huge difference in my quality of life. When I first went to my Rhuemy and found out what was wrong, I was so sick I could barely function with fatigue, joint and muscle aches just to name a few. I had no problems taking Hydroxychloriquine for RA as it stopped the flare up in a short time. Stupidly I thought I didn't need it so asked my doc if I could stop. That's when I became inflamed but not the joints until another flare up 11 months later. I think it keep my acute pancreatitis at bay as well as RA.
